Inflammatory bowel disease or IBD includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, which causes inflammation in the digestive tract. The causes of IBD are unknown. Inflammatory bowel disease symptoms include abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, and fever. Other symptoms of IBD include weight loss. The goal of IBD treatment is to suppress inflammation.

Most with the disease can live full, productive lives, without tailoring life according to the dictates of the disease. Some however have more severe cases which may require modification of some things about there life such as what they eat, medicines they take, managing of stress levels, or ways they exercise.

Both Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis can be managed, but not cured.

  2. I remember learning about this in my chronic disease class and it was really interesting because Dr. Novilla had one of her old students come in who had IBD and had a lot of her intestines taken out. It made it a lot more personal and real, so interesting.

  3. Oh that was really neat in Novilla's class when the student came in and talked about it. I definitely got a good idea of what someone has to go through with this disease. It was very interesting

  4. I have a cousin who has a severe case of Crohn's Disease. She has been on all kinds of medications since she was really young. She smokes, which made the condition worse and has had a few near death experiences. Pretty scary!
